Giles Atkinson is Reader in Environmental in Policy in the Department of Geography and Environment and Associate of the Grantham Research Institute of Climate Change and Environment at the London School of Economics.
An environmental economist by training, his research interests cover a number of aspects of environmental policy and appraisal. In particular, Giles has published extensively on the subject of sustainable development particularly 'green accounting' including two recent co-authored books on these subjects (Wealth, Welfare and Sustainability: Recent Advances in Measuring Sustainable Development, 2006, and the Handbook of Sustainable Development, 2007, both Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd).
He has also written on cost-benefit analysis (including a flagship OECD publication co-authored with the late David Pearce: Cost-Benefit Analysis and the Environment: Recent Developments, 2006) as well as using stated preference methods to appraise environmental (and related) policies and environmental equity. In addition to being an Advisory Board member for TEEB, Giles is currently also a member of the UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Environmental Economics Academic Panel, an Honorary Fellow of the Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment, University of East Anglia and a member of the Advisory Board of the Green Indian States Trust (GIST).
