Jochen Flasbarth is the President of the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA). He studied economics (with emphasis on transport), political science and philosophy in Münster and Bonn. From 1989 to 1994 he worked as chief editor at the publishing house Economica. From 1992 to 2003 he acted as President of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU). Before his appointment as President of the UBA by German Federal President Horst Köhler, he was the head of Directorate-General “Nature Conservation and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources” at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. Since May 2009 Jochen Flasbarth has been the chairman of the Bureau to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
For many years he has been active in conservation and environmental policy including serving as a member of the executive board and committee of the German League for Nature and Environment (DNR), as a member of the supervisory board of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy as well as a founding board member of the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (an association for sustainable mobility) and Allianz pro Schiene (alliance for the promotion of rail transport).
He served as a member of the German Council for Sustainable Development and the National Committee for Sustainable Development.
