Dr. Ladislav Miko, PhD. was born on April 9, 1961 in Košice. In 1984, he graduated from the Faculty of Science of Charles University in Prague (general biology and cytology). In 1996, he obtained his PhD. at the same faculty in the field of systematic zoology and ecology.

This year, he became assistant professor (docent) at the Faculty of Environmental Science of the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague. He began his professional career at the Institute Landscape Ecology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

In 1992 – 2001, he was employed by the Czech Environmental Inspectorate and worked for some time as the Deputy Director.  In 2001, he assessed EU projects as an independent consultant within the PHARE program. From 2002 to 2005, he was the Deputy Minister of the Environment for nature conservation and landscape protection.  After being chosen in a demanding international selection procedure, he was appointed as the Director of the Protecting the Natural Environment Directorate of the EU Commission (DG Environment).

In 1989, he was one of the leaders of the Verejnost proti násiliu movement in Košice;  he took part in the founding of the Green Party in Slovakia, of which he was a member until 1993.  He has not been a member of any political party for the past 16 years. His interests include photography, tourism, literature and the theatre.

Ladislav Miko is married and has two children (16 and 21 years of age).
