‘Healthy ecosystems for resilient societies‘ is chosen as the theme of the first regional Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) conference to take place in Latin America. This ESP conference will convene scientists, policy makers and practitioners to discuss the role that ecosystem services can play to reduce socioeconomic tensions in the region and achieve sustainable and inclusive development.
In the absence of effective governance, the uneven distribution of the benefits provided by ecosystems can lead to social and environmental conflicts. This is the reality in many Latin American countries, which threatens their capacity to reach the Sustainable Development Goals. An ecosystem services approach is needed to recognize the importance of the functions and benefits that nature provides to humans, and ensure their continued availability. This approach can help design conservation practices and policies, develop capabilities, and promote the fair use of natural resources, as a strategy towards sustainable development.
Although the conference is focused on Latin America, perspectives from other regions will also be included.
The conference is organised by CIAT (International Center for Tropical Agriculture), IAvH (Alexander von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute), and the Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP). It is hosted by CIAT, Colombia.
